Choosing a Front Facing Car Seat For Your Child

May 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

There are so many different types of car seats out there, that it can be quite difficult choosing the right one for your child. And, choosing the correct seat for your child is essential to the protection and safety of your child. According to a study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 70% of all child restraint systems are used incorrectly. In fact, some parents don’t use child restraints for their children at all.

One of the most crucial times for children’s restraints is when they need to transition from rear-facing seats to front facing seats. Many parents do not know when the appropriate time to start using a front facing seat or which kind is best for their child. The front facing seat you choose depends heavily on the type of car you drive, the age, and the weight of your child.

Car seats for infants are generally rated for safety for children that are less than 40 pounds. The recommended age requirement for the use of a front facing car seat is 12 months. And, the recommended weight range for front facing seats is between 40 and 80 pounds. Each model and brand of car seats will vary, so the requirements will also differ.

One of the most common types of front facing seats is convertible seats. The child restraints can be converted between front and rear facing seats at any time. This allows an easier transition for when your child is old and big enough to use a front facing seat.

Another type of infant seat that is commonly used is a combination seat. Like the convertible car seat, the combination seat can be changed to fit your child’s needs. With this seat, you can change the parts for the seat to accompany your growing child, which gives it longevity. Most combination seats can be changed between front facing seats and booster seats. Most booster seats are tested for safety for children who are less than 100 pounds.

Along with the different types of car seats, there are also different kinds of harnesses for the seats. The two choices for harnesses for your child are the “five-point harness” and the overhead shield. The “five-point harness” consists of straps that connect between the legs, over the hips, and over the shoulders of your child. The overhead shield is usually a padded arm that fits over a child’s head and locks into place on their shoulders.

Both of these types of harnesses have been tested and considered very safe for your child to use as restraints. So, the choice between the two is based on your personal preferences.

Choosing a front facing seat isn’t the only thing that you need to be worried about when you get your child a car seat. You also need to make sure that you are assembling the child restraint correctly and you are using it properly. There are many injuries/deaths caused by the improper use of a front facing car seat. To be sure that your child is safe, be very careful and read the manual that comes with the restraint to make sure you fully understand how it works.

When shopping for travel strollers, look for ones that are easy to install in cars and it is always a good idea to make sure that the seat with actually fit in your car as well. Baby travel strollers add convenience into a new parent’s life and are very easy to use.

If you are a parent who is constantly go, a lightweight stroller might be the best idea for you. Lightweight strollers have come a long way in the past few years, no longer just featuring an umbrella, but also now feature reclining seats, parent cup holders and under seat storage bags. Lightweight strollers typically weigh less than 14 pounds and are the most compact, portable type of stroller. Strollers lightweight are so convenient and take up so little space that many parents keep these in their trunks at all times. While shopping for strollers that are lightweight, you should consider an adjustable sunshade, five-point harness and an easy-to-use parking brake. Lightweight strollers are designed primarily for infants who can hold their heads up and can sit upright unassisted at about six months old. However, some models are suitable for younger babies if the stroller has a reclining seat. These strollers can also be used for many years since there is a high weight limit that is also ideal for older toddlers. If you are a parent who is on the go; a lightweight stroller is a good investment.

Perhaps you are a parent who is expecting twins or maybe you have two children who are pretty close in age to each other? Then a double stroller is the perfect stroller for your family’s use. Double strollers either have side-by-side seating or tandem seating. Side-by-side seating is ideal for two older or similarly aged children and usually features reclining seats. Tandem seating often features swivel seats so that one or both children can look at the scenery going by. Double baby strollers are a lifesaver and also easily transported for everyday use.

What We Need To Know About Car Seat Safety

February 20, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

flintstonesCar 300x250 What We Need To Know About Car Seat SafetyThere is a correct way in which to secure your child in his car seat. Here are guide for the parents to keep your baby safe while in the car:

When you finding the best car seat, try to check is that matches to your baby’s size and weight. The car seat also fits properly in your car and is easily installed.

There are some types of baby car seats such as infant seats, front facing car seats, and convertible seats. And each type of car seat has a lot of variations. Infants or children under a year of age should be placed in rear-facing seats in the center of the rear seat. And the older children can sit facing front and their seat are usually placed behind the driver or passenger. Discuss your options with your pediatrician, if you have children with special needs that may require different restraint systems.

Your child will be ready for using the baby car safety restraint system without a booster seat when they can sit comfortable in the seat the whole trip and the knees can bend at ease over the edge of the seat. Also consider that the belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and the arm. The lap belt is must be low and touches the thighs.

For the baby car safety, read the print manufacture instruction seriously, about how to using car seat and how to properly install it. Call or email the manufacturer if you not sure about the installation.

The great protection that can hold your baby tighter in the seat in the event of a crash is a five-point or six-point harness. The five-point harness has two straps at the shoulders, two straps at the hips and one at the crotch. The T-shield is a padded triangle that latches at the crotch while the overhead shield comes down from over the head and latches at the crotch. Avoid a T-Shield, because it allows too much room or can get in the way of chubby tummies and legs. The stalk of the T-Shield can also cause serious injury to your baby.

It is safe to use second-hand baby car seats provided you do a safety check which belts and harnesses should not be frayed or cracked. Don’t forget to look into the history of the car seat, if it has been in a car crash or if the seat is more than 5 years old do not buy it.

Gogo Kidz Travelmate Car Seat Wheeler

February 2, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

gogo kidz travelmate carseatwheeler Gogo Kidz Travelmate Car Seat WheelerThe GoGo Kidz Travelmate was the smartest purchase we have made in a long time. What this fine product does is turn your car seat into convenient rolling luggage, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a convertible car seat, infant car seat, or booster seat (although I think they might have a different model for the booster seat). We used it with the Britax Marathon convertible car seat (and you know how big those Britax convertible car seats can get) and we were never so thankful as we were while walking through 6 mile long airport terminals, on our way from Madison, WI. to Oregon. for the holidays. It allows you to take your car seat (that I would’ve normally not taken because it’s such a hassle to lug around the airport) through the airport with ease. It works even better when your child is sitting in it – so it also turns your car seat into a temporary stroller (so you don’t need to bring that through the airport anymore, either)!

All you do is place the car seat on the back, thread the hard plastic strip through where the lapbelt would normally go, secure it to the other side by using it’s easy clipping mechanism (which is very easy to tighten and secure), and that’s it! Put your child in the car seat, and roll them through the airport with ease. The handle bar slides up and down just like your luggage handle does, so when it’s time to go into the airplane, you just disconnect the Travelmate and put it under your seat. It’s that easy. I’ll never travel without this product, ever again!
