Perfect Strollers for Shopping with your Baby
February 24, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Love to shop? Whether you just love to take long walks and window-shop, or whether you expect to come home loaded down with bags and boxes, there’s a stroller for you out there—one that can keep Baby happy and comfortable while you upgrade your spring wardrobe or find the perfect ingredients for dinner.
Baby First, of Course
Any shopping trip is much more delightful if you keep one simple rule in mind: a happy baby is a baby who won’t pitch a screaming fit and send you fleeing from the store. A stroller that can recline for sleeping, such as the Chicco Cortina, is key. A travel system with a good car seat, such as the Graco Passage and SnugRide car seat, is an excellent choice for the youngest babies.
New mothers are often pleasantly surprised by this golden period when Baby might actually sleep through an entire shopping trip. Older babies are kept amused by novelty; having some toys that are exclusively used for shopping trips might be a wise idea. It’s also important to keep snacks on hand, but avoid having your baby actually snack in the store itself; that’s a fast track to making yourself an unpopular customer.
Don’t Be a Basket Case
Some strollers offer roomy, accessible storage; others are designed so that you’d be hard pressed to stash a couple of diapers somewhere, let alone any purchases. Look for a stroller with a large basket under the seat, preferably one that can be accessed easily. After all, if you can’t reach the basket, it’s not doing you any good. The UPPA Baby Vista and the Safety 1st Acella Sport Travel System are good examples. It’s generally a bad idea to hang bags off of the handles (especially with lightweight strollers, this can lead to injury). Some strollers, however, are designed so that you can hang a diaper bag off the back, saving you storage space elsewhere; pay close attention to manufacturer recommendations on this.
If you can walk to your local grocery store, you’ll find that a stroller with a good shopping basket can substitute for an actual cart for small shopping trips. If you plan to use it at the mall, the under-seat basket can hold a bag or two, making further browsing more convenient.
Turn, Turn, Turn
Some stores are very stroller-friendly, of course; most strollers have no trouble in the wide aisles at Costco or your local grocery store. But if you’re a boutique shopper or someone who likes to browse the shops on Commercial Drive, you’ll want a stroller that is lightweight, easy to maneuver with one hand, and collapsible so that you can keep it in your car trunk or navigate the subway easily when you head downtown. Maclaren’s umbrella strollers are a good bet; another excellent choice is a smaller jogging stroller, such as Baby Jogger’s City Mini.
Having a good stroller while shopping makes it much easier to keep Baby happy and engaged. For babies, even a trip to the grocery store can be a dazzling new world. Sometimes Baby will be content just to take in the scenery, but it’s also fun to engage and entertain your little sidekick while you shop. After all, she won’t tell you that those jeans make you look fat—what more could you ask for?

Buying Basics

A baby’s stroller is one of the most important pieces of baby gear you will ever buy. You need to make sure that your little passenger will be riding in something safe, dependable and comfortable. By doing so you will insure that your little one is taken care of and your life is as easy as it can be. Checking out stroller reviews online is the easiest way to arm yourself with all the information you will need to make the perfect stroller purchase.
The average mom has three baby strollers at one time, mostly because not one stroller is versatile enough to meet all of your needs. There is a huge variety of baby strollers to choose from. The most popular categories on the market are:
- Full Size /Standard Strollers: Your “go to” stroller. Stable, comfortable and packed with convenient features and options.
- Travel Systems: Full size strollers with infant car seats for seamless transport between the car and stroller.
- All Terrain: 3 wheeled strollers built for rougher terrain than suburban sidewalks.
- Jogging: Designed with large wheels and great suspension to allow a smooth ride for baby while you run.
- Combo: A stroller chassis with exchangeable bassinet, regular seat and infant car seat. Expensive but very versatile.
- Lightweight / Umbrella Strollers: Great for travel and quick trips, they break down quickly for easy storage and quick transport.
Look for stroller reviews that give you a good picture of a stroller’s:
- safety features
- ease of use
- dependability
- convenience
- storage size
- comfort (for you and baby)
Where you buy a baby stroller can be as important as which one you buy. Make sure the stroller reviews you are reading are from an unbiased source. Many websites sell baby strollers, so their stroller reviews are tainted; often the most expensive one, or the one overstocked is the best!
Look for neutral stroller reviews by checking out web sites that don’t sell the products they review. Stroller review sites like these are the best way to get impartial opinions. Many e-commerce sites like Amazon.com also have extensive stroller reviews from users themselves. These are great as they give you real world examples of what works and what doesn’t.
While you are checking out stroller reviews on these sites, pay attention to price. Prices can vary by huge amounts from one place to the next. If you find a baby stroller you like shop around a bit more to see what best price is.
Put some time into selecting a baby stroller (you usually have around 9 months). Check out the info online, test drive a couple around your local baby store and ask for recommendations from friends and family. The time and effort put into finding a great stroller at a great price will pay off down the road and make your life infinitely easier.
Got Twins?

If you have twins you know that everything is more expensive for two. Not to mention more cumbersome, heavier, bulkier and generally more inconvenient. That is why it is so important to put in the time to research before buying a double stroller for your twins. The stroller you chose will either make life easier on you or all around more frustrating. There are many variables that you must consider when shopping for your stroller and there is a stroller to meet every persons needs.
The first thing you must consider when shopping for a twin stroller is durability. You are going to rely on this stroller for the next three years. You don’t want to waste your money buying a cheap stroller with plastic joints that will warp and break. Save yourself the headache and the money of replacing the stroller by buying a more expensive quality double stroller the first time. This doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank, it just means that a $350 BOB jogging stroller is likely to last where as a $200 InStep may not (personal experience).
The next thing you want to consider is your lifestyle. Do you love to go on long walks every evening or will you need to weave in and out of racks at the mall? Maybe you are planning on jogging off the baby weight. Do you live in a big city where you will walk everywhere or will you need to fit your stroller in the trunk of your car most days? For most the answer will be yes to at least two of these questions so you will want to find a versatile stroller that can meet all of your needs or get two strollers, one for the mall and one for jogging, for example. A narrow jogging stroller with free moving front wheel will work for most situations. It will be comfortable on a long walk through the park, the zoo, and even the mall (although no side by side can fit through the racks of a small store). Some good quality, compact side-by-sides are, the Ditto Manhattan DLX and my favorite the Mountain Buggy Urban Elite Double Jogging Stroller.
The last things to consider are style and convenience. You want a double stroller you are comfortable pushing. Style is not all about superficial looks; it is about comfort and compatibility with your life. You may be more drawn to a front/ back tandem stroller or you may prefer a side by side jogging stroller. Whichever you prefer, you want to get one that you like. Remember, you will have to be attached to this stroller every time you leave the house. With that in mind convenience is a big issue with double strollers. You need a stroller with enough storage, and cup holders for you but you also want one that will give comfort to your children. A big canopy that is completely adjustable is great to keep the sun out of little eyes. Comfy padded seats will keep the kids happy and removable washable fabrics will keep you happy.
With so much to consider and the wide range of brands available it can seem overwhelming to shop for a double stroller for your twins. Buying a stroller should be a fun experience though. There are so many styles, colors, shapes and sizes to choose from that you can find a fit for just about any personality.
A Bit from Dad about Strollers
February 24, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
“Did you find the right kind of stroller?” It has wheels, you put the kid in it… what did she mean by kind of stroller?
How little did I know.
As it turns out, my survival instincts combined with my Superdad nature and I did a bit of research on strollers. Dads, listen up: there are TONS of different kinds of strollers out there. Save yourself some grief and check out what I found…
Regular or Standard Strollers: these strollers are what you see most of the time at the mall- not that Superdad spends a lot of time at the mall, but it’s what you’d use there. It has a place for one kid to sit and maybe a little room underneath or behind for necessities- a few diapers, wipes, a bottle or two… that kind of thing.
But what if you need something for the flea market or church? Something for the back of the smaller car? This is when the Lightweight Stroller comes into play. Lightweight strollers are easily recognizable by their traditional umbrella handled push bars as well as how compact they can break down. Situations when you just need to get the kiddoes moved a very short distance or in a tight space usually warrant this kind of stroller. Generally, they weigh less, and take up less storage space but have fewer features than the others. Of all the types of strollers, the one you can’t do without is the Lightweight Stroller.
So what if you have a newborn? You can’t put a newborn in just any stroller; it’s much smarter to opt for a Stroller Travel System. Stroller Travel Systems integrate car carriers into a medium weight stroller frame that is usually designed to grow with the child to a point. It’s not unusual for these Stroller Travel Systems to stay in your home until your child is well into his toddler phase.
That covers most of the conventional stroller choices but there are a few others that you might have to consider if you fit the lifestyle:
Multiple Child Strollers, for those who didn’t learn after having the first child. These come in just about every imaginable configuration from twins, to toddler plus twins, to quintuplets. They generally cost more than a normal model but you have to get those rascals around somehow.
Active Strollers are for those of us who would like to stay in shape- these strollers incorporate larger wheels and are designed for the kind of tough treatment you might expect when bringing baby out on the jogging trail or even behind your bike. Common features include hand brakes, larger tires, and lower centers of gravity.
Prams or Fashion Strollers- Remember those old Tom & Jerry cartoons with the stroller with the large wheels, the raised up sun bonnet, the shopping cart handle and the little tyke inside facing mommy? Well, a few things have changed besides the fact that Superdad is just as likely to be the one pushing but the basic design remains. Think of these strollers less as vehicles for moving the kids from A to B, but more of a mobile crib or travelling basinet.
Thanks Dad!
